Prophet Elijah

Today is a Sunday. During the service today the pastor shared about the Prophet Elijah in the bible. He shared from two scriptures, the book of James and the book of 1 Kings.

17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

James 5:17-18 (New International Version)

Another passage was from 1Kings Chapter 17-19.

The sermon was really fruitful, basically pastor (His name is Elijah too, so today Pastor Elijah preached about Prophet Elijah....not bad huh? haha...) shared about how to be strong and consistent in our daily walks.

The message is especially for those who are leaving either for internship or graduation seniors. But then, i guess it sort of applies to everyone.

In the sermon, pastor shared that in order to be strong for God, we need to set our focus on God alone. Just like the Elijah in the bible, when God called him to curse the land, then to go to the brooks, to go to the widow's place, then to confront the 850 false prophets of Baal and Asherah, to call the fire from heaven and to call rain upon the land, Elijah obeyed and followed every directions God gave him with courage and faith. Then God really used him mightily. But then, after the rain, when Jezebel threatened to kill him, he ran away. He was frightened and he shifted his focus to himself thus the fear creeps in.

After that , God showed himself to him and reminded him that He is not among all those big wind, fire or earthquake (pastor resembles them as the excitement, the environment, the people around and etc), but God is in the still small voice that spoke to him. So, to be brave and to be strong, we need to set our focus to God. If we set our focus to the wrong things like the building, the people, the excitement and so on, we will find ourselves start to feel weary and fearful.

Just like when Peter first saw Jesus walking on water, he asked Jesus to command him so that he can walk on water too towards Jesus. At first, when he set his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on water. But when he shifted his focus and started to look around him, his focus was on the waves thus he starting to sink as fear creeps into him.

thus, our focus in life is very important. To be strong and to be faithful, we need to set our focus on our Lord, Jesus Christ. Be blessed! Amen.
